Special Services

ES-Consult has since its establishment completed several tasks related to important civil and structural works and has also carried out many special assignments in the category of applied sience. A very important part of the activities of the firm has been assistance and technical consultances to building- and infrastructure owners.
Here follows descriptions of a series of ES-Consult's special services.

Comfort Criteria of Vibrations

Introduction

ES-Consult has extensive knowledge in assessing the comfort experience associated with vibrations.
VVibrations induced by the dynamic behaviour of structures and vehicles may cause discomfort depending on a number of factors such as the frequency content, the amplitude, the duration and the direction of the vibration.
By theoretical and numerical tools, ES-Consult provides a thorough assessment of comfort problems.
In addition to the desk-top evaluation of vibration problems, ES-Consult has experiences in fullscale monitoring tests. ES-Consult strongly emphasizes this link to the real world to ensure the quality and the relevance of the analyses. The company has at it's disposal a digital tri-axial accelerometer allowing accurate and easily obtained measurements of vibrations in structures of any kind.
Through experience and participation in reviews of the design basis of larger projects and design codes in general, ES-Consult has insight in, and up-to-date knowledge of, the current codes within the field of dynamics and vibration comfort.

Examples of ES-Consult's experiences:

Example no. 1 - The Øresund Link

The level of comfort, which will be experienced by train passengers on the Øresund Link between Sweden and Denmark, has been evaluated.
This has been done by extensive numerical simulations of trains running on the railway track through a 4 kilometres tunnel and over an 8 kilometres long bridge. In these simulations, the importance of the interaction between vehicle, track and structure has been fully assessed.

Example no. 2 - Composite Floor

The structural serviceability of a composite floor of an office building has been investigated by a finite element model using modal analysis.
The analysis showed that the effect of people walking on the floor would not cause any comfort problems according to current ISO standards.

Research and Development

ES-Consult has an active research and development policy, which means that our knowledge within structural dynamics is at the forefront of technology.
Further, ES-Consult has close contacts with researchers at the two leading technical universities in Denmark, The Technical University of Denmark and Aalborg University. It also may be mentioned that ES-Consult's chairman of the board of directors is Professor Michael Thompson, a leading researcher in non-linear dynamics at University College London, UK.
